The benefits brokerage industry is at a crossroads. While automation makes it easier to reach more people, it has also created a "noise of sameness" that leads many prospects to hit the delete button. In this episode of the Benefits Broker Boost Podcast, Adam Smith, CMO at Plansight, and Dennis Walker, Employee Benefits Producer at USI, discuss how to cut through the noise. By combining advanced tools like AI with old-school "front door" grit, brokers can move beyond being a vendor and become true strategic consultants to the C-suite.
In an era where everyone has access to "silver bullet" outreach tools, true differentiation is becoming rare. Dennis points out that customization often becomes a facade: “Be careful that what you think is customization doesn't become sameness, and understand that they're getting 40 different brokers.” To truly bet on yourself, you must move away from generic templates and focus on data that actually affects the client’s bottom line, such as analyzing Form 5500s for compliance gaps or rising costs.
One of the most powerful shifts a broker can make is insisting that the CEO be in the room. Many executives claim they don't understand healthcare and prefer to delegate it to HR, but Dennis argues that brokers should "call them on that".
“You are an equal to them because you have knowledge they don't.” While CFOs and CEOs understand finance and budgets, the broker understands how policy design and claims control actually work. By teaching them healthcare strategy in a way they can grasp, you empower them to hold their teams accountable for better plan decisions.
Rising costs are forcing a total rethink of the healthcare consumption model. Dennis advocates moving small, routine claims to a "cash" or subscription model, such as direct primary care (DPC), to avoid billing the insurance plan.
Beyond the math, there is a human element. Dennis sees a future in which charity plays a larger role in the space to help bridge the widening wealth gap. “For those of us who do make money, we have a responsibility to start charities, to fund good charities, and to help those who need care that they can't afford.” The goal is to return to a standard where no one is turned away because they can’t pay.
Adam and Dennis agree that AI is not going away. However, the key is controlling the tool rather than letting it control you. Dennis builds specific "agents" within his models for tasks such as benefits analysis and prospect research.
“AI's think in what's called tokens... it then matches what's most likely by a statistical algorithm to come next.” Because AI is programmed to be "confident" first and "helpful" second, brokers must build guardrails to prevent hallucinations. Using internal, encrypted models like Copilot is essential to remain HIPAA-compliant and prevent sensitive data from bleeding into public models.
For newcomers entering the industry, the fastest way to bridge the "innovation gap" is through grit and discipline and seeking out experienced mentors. Dennis suggests finding mentors who built their books "with paper" because their fundamental understanding of policy management is often superior to that of those who know only digital tools.
Success in this field requires a multi-pronged approach. Don't just learn about your type of insurance. Learn about all types. By partnering with experts who don't miss details and learning about alternative risk management methods, such as 831Bs, you build the authority needed to close complex deals.
The future belongs to brokers who can mix fax machines with AI to combine technical mastery with genuine human empathy. Whether it is through a physical drop-in or a complex self-funding strategy, the goal is the same: providing clarity and control to the people who need it most.
